Message from Mrs. Anson Chan, GBM, GCMG, CBE, JP

I am honoured to be invited to become the Patron of The Life Underwriters Association of Hong Kong. The Association has the largest number of life insurance practitioners as its members in Hong Kong and clearly has an influence on the quality of services provided and on the future development of this important sector of our economy.

Insurance plays an increasingly important role in our social and economic activities. Quality insurance is an indispensable part of any modern international city and Hong Kong aspires to be Asia’s world city, with first class communication, transportation, financial and trading facilities and a range of personal services that can help individuals protect and enhance their quality of life. Globalisation brings increased competition. The insurance industry must diversify, raise its professional standards and maintain ethical behaviour if it is to meet the rising expectations of our community.

As Patron, I hope to encourage the Association, its leaders and members, to have regard always to the best interests of its clients. This means maintaining high professional and ethical standards, a high degree of transparency in the industry, and developing the ability and skills to cope with rapid changes through innovation, diversification and adequate training for its members. In this way, not only will the Hong Kong public be best served but the insurance industry here and its practitioners will be able to act as a beacon for the orderly development of the insurance industry in the mainland.

I look forward to a happy and productive relationship with The Life Underwriters Association of Hong Kong.
